Ford is taking significant steps forward in its dedication to electric vehicle production. In a strategic move to enhance these efforts, the company has partnered with SK Innovation to develop multiple battery manufacturing plants. This initiative will bring the production of lithium-ion batteries within the country, supporting not only Ford’s electric vehicles but also other applications.

Ford has teamed up with SK Innovation to invest in new battery manufacturing plants to support their ambition of leading the electric vehicle market. With an annual capacity of 86 GWh, these dual facilities will substantially enhance U.S. production of lithium-ion batteries, which will be utilized in Ford’s electric vehicles.

Having previously worked on the original advanced lithium-ion battery manufacturing facility for LG Energy Solution (LGES) in Holland, a major production campus expansion is being designed to meet the increasing product demand. The production plant will accommodate battery module and pack assembly as well as nano-phosphate powder production functions, which include material mixing, coating, roll press, slitting, notching, pancake stacking, drying, assembly, formation, and aging. Additionally, the facility will feature electrode cleanrooms, assembly dry rooms, and support spaces. The site will also include a raw materials distribution warehouse, a two-story administration building, and support buildings housing operations such as solvent equipment distribution, electrolyte storage/distribution, hazardous waste storage, and cell testing.

With operations set to commence by the second half of 2025, these engineering efforts ensure that the plant's critical infrastructure meets rigorous safety and performance standards, particularly in seismic resilience, underscoring a commitment to supporting the future of sustainable automotive manufacturing.
